Few artists could pull off a seven-and-a-half minute single with just one repeated lyric - Melbourne-based avant-pop trailblazer Eddie Casper breaks the mold.
Soaring vocals, hypnotic melodies and a slow-burning energy - “I Wish You Knew (Everything You Are to Me)” is the latest single to come from Eddie Casper’s second album Ohmage. After the success of his previous two singles “She’s Got So Many Faces” and “These Things Take Time”, Casper delves deep into an mesmerising, psychedelic soundscape with the spellbinding power of “I Wish You Knew” and its accompanying music video.
Eddie Casper’s latest single emanates an almost spiritual-like quality. The single lyric of the song - “I wish you knew everything you are to me” - repeats like a mantra, building in spirit with every additional vocal harmony, while the surrounding instruments ebb and flow in a lush wall-of-sound. “As the vocals start stacking up, the lyrics develop new meaning with every repetition,” explains Casper.
“‘I Wish You Knew’ is not so much an expression of unrequited love directed at an individual, but more a proclamation of gratitude for life itself. “Being in my early 20s when I worked on this album, I suddenly felt that life had opened up and all these new possibilities had presented themselves,” explains Casper. “I had reached an age where my understanding of the world was expanding - I had gained independence, fallen in love and experienced heartbreak for the first time; all these new experiences led to an enormous sense of personal growth which I felt I needed to channel into a song.”
The resultant piece “I Wish You Knew” captures the grandiosity of Caspers’ sensibilities while exemplifying his position as a trailblazer in music production. Across the seven-and-a-half minutes, Casper masterfully introduces dazzling new sounds ranging from shoegaze-esque guitars, reversed vocals, and crystal-like synthesizers cascading through the famous Roland Space Echo. “My primary focus, above all else, was to create a piece of music embellished with a remarkable, unique texture to it,” elaborates Casper.
“I Wish You Knew” stands proudly at the centre of his second album “Ohmage” - an immersive 78-minute epic that rewards listeners with its lush, interconnected musical soundscapes.
Only a handful of artists can claim the title of “One-man band” to the extent of Eddie Casper, who writes, records, produces, mixes and masters his music all by himself. Ohmage saw the multi-instrumentalist perform more than 20 different instruments. “Creating an album on your own requires persistence, resilience and the self-belief to create something unique,” affirms Casper. “I’ve finally reached a point where I feel confident in my abilities as an artist and I think that notion is captured with the new single.”
Maintaining his position as a holistically DIY artist, the mesmerising song has been brought to life with an accompanying music video directed and edited by Casper himself. Combining his own footage (taken from the same lighthouse featured on the Ohmage album cover) with vintage home video snippets, the music video captures the grand sense of enormity and wonder that the music evokes.
